Plans are underway for several Veterans Day programs in Mingo County.
The Williamson Health and Wellness Center will host a Military Special Event at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 10, with Gen. Robert H. Fogleson serving as the keynote speaker.
During this event, all veterans and active military will be recognized, according to Amy Hannah with WHWC. Deceased veterans and deployed military personnel will be representative by family members. Dinner will be served.
The town of Matewan’s 18th Annual Veterans Day Parade/Program will be held on Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11. The parade will begin at noon at the Matewan Depot Replica with the route ending at the Matewan City Hall where formal program will be held at approximately 12:30 p.m.
The Jammie Darrin Christian Academy located in the Gilbert/Justice area will host a Veterans Day program at the school beginning at noon of Monday, Nov. 11.
In observance of Veterans Day, federal, state and local governmental offices will be closed in observance of Veterans Day on Monday, Nov 11.
The administrative offices of the Mingo County Commission and Courthouse will be closed on Monday. Along with the county, the cities of Delbarton, Gilbert, Matewan and Williamson will also be closed.
In addition to the municipal closings, the towns of Delbarton, Gilbert and Kermit have council meetings which fall on this date. Delbarton which has two meetings each month has chosen to cancel Monday’s meeting and postpone all business until it next meeting on Monday, Nov. 25. The Gilbert Town Council will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
The administrative offices for the town of Kermit will be open. The town will follow regular schedules for is departments and council meeting.
All emergency services such as fire, police and ambulance will operate normally.
The United States Postal Service will close its local post offices and suspend all deliveries on Monday. Normal hours of operation will resume Tuesday.
BB&T, Bank of Mingo, Community Trust Bank, First National Bank of Williamson, U.S. Bank and each of their respective branches will be closed on Monday and will reopen on Tuesday.
Mingo County public schools and the administrative offices of the Mingo County Board of Education will also be closed.
The Williamson Public Library and all branches of the Mingo County Public Library will be closed.
Waste Management will follow regular trash collection schedules. However, Veolia Water, which accommodates customers in Williamson, will not have any pick-ups on Veterans Day. All Monday customers will be serviced on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
