“Jack” Belcher

Jackie “Jack” Elmer Belcher, 69 of Bruno, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2019.

He was born at Man, May 31, 1949, one of 11 children born to the late Elmer and Tressie Grimmett Belcher.

He was a loving husband, father, papaw, brother, uncle and friend. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to make people smile. He was always willing to help anyone if he could and loved spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Tammy; three brothers, Donnie, Ronnie and Billy Belcher; four sisters, Geneva Molisee, Alice Wright, Barbara Robinson and Glenda Browder; and a very special sister-in-law, Helen “Suzie” Walls.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Janet Toler Belcher, of Bruno; one daughter, Tonya; two brothers, Jimmy Belcher, of Greenville, and Velmer Belcher, of Bruno; one sister, Naomi Workman, of Greenville; his babies, Laura “Sha” Blankenship, Preston Blankenship, Kaden Cantrell, Davey Goodman, Landon Cantrell, Noah Cantrell and Makinley Cantrell, who knew him as Papaw; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other dear family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019, at the Greenville Freewill Baptist Church, Greenville, with Rev. Baxtor Toler and Rev. Bill Cantrell officiating. Burial followed at the Highland Memorial Gardens, Pecks Mill. He was carried to his final resting place by family and friends. Arrangements were under the direction of Mounts Funeral Home, Inc., of Gilbert.

His beautiful smile and tender heart will be greatly missed by all who knew and love him.

Wanda Cook

Wanda Lee Kenneda Cook, 85, a resident of the Wyoming Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, New Richmond, formerly of Simon, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019, following a long illness.

She was born on May 10, 1933, the daughter of the late Bryan and Lennie Morgan Kenneda. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Parlie Harper (George), Atlas Morgan (Powell), Maxine Harper (Donald) and Alberta Moore (Clifford); one brother, Jennings Kenneda (Vicie Deloris “Rusty”); and two half-sisters, Sue Ann Lester (Clarence) and Doris Wingler; one infant daughter, Wilma Lee Cook; and four sons, Jerry Lynn Cook (Infant), Sonny Cook, Randall Cook and Kelvin Cook.

She is survived by one son, Timmy Cook (Suzette), of Oceana; one sister, Linnie Lawrence (Norman), of Simon; one daughter-in-law, Vera Cook (Lockhart), of Hanover; three grandchildren, Donna Cook, of Morgantown, Dana Lester (Noah), of Hanover, and Daniel Cook (Karri), of Winfield; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren and friends.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019, at the Mounts Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Alvin Browning officiating. Burial followed at the Kenneda-Harper Family Cemetery, Wolf Pen Hollow, Simon. She was carried to her final resting place by family and friends. Arrangements were under the direction of Mounts Funeral Home, Inc., of Gilbert.

Dewey New

Dewey Carol New, 71, of Baisden, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2019, at Logan Regional Medical Center, Logan.

He was born at Baisden, June 9, 1947, the son of the late Hersel and Nada Kirk New.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and raising animals. He was a member of the War Eagle Church of God.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Jerry Kay New; his brother, Jean Hersel New; and three infant brothers.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Kay Wallace New; his children, Terry New (Melissa), Tammy New, John New, Carolyn Steele (Billy) and Bobby New; his sisters, Deloris Mayhorn (Danny), Annette Morgan (Chucky), Beverly Gibson (Jeremy)  and Laura Blankenship (Joe); his grandchildren, Terry New Jr. (Amanda), Jerry Brett New, Bobby New (Ashley), Joshua New (Courtney), Kisha Fyffe (Shawn), Steven New (Kendra), Jerry Justin New, Randy Ray McCoy, Jayden Cline and John Fredrick New Jr.; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of other dear relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019, at the Full Gospel Church of God, Baisden, with Rev. Jonas Trent and Bro. Ralphy Manuel officiating. Burial followed at the New Cemetery, Baisden. He was carried to his final resting place by his family and friends. Serving as honorary pallbearers were: Anthony Gibson, Rick Gibson and Big Bobby Lee New. Arrangements were under the direction of Mounts Funeral Home, Inc., of Gilbert.

He may be gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.

Edna Oney

Edna Marie Martin Oney, 74, of Williamson, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2019, at her residence.

She was born at Elk Creek, Dec. 8, 1944, the daughter of the late Earl Thomas and Lydia White Martin. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Oney; her brother, Roy Martin; and her sisters, Ora Hall and Nanny Mounts.  

She was a homemaker.  

She is survived by her children, Earl Stanly Baisden, of Lick Creek, and Betty Jane Baisden, of Williamson; her brothers, Troy Martin (Francis), Carl Martin (Betty), Bill Martin, Dewey Martin (Rose Anna), Jim Martin (Rhodean) and Larry Martin (Ann); her grandchildren, Faith Browning, Crista Baisden, Brittany Bevins and Arain Justice; her great-grandchildren, Skylynn, Kynslei and Dreden; and many nieces, nephews, other dear family and friends.  

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 7, 2019, at the Chafin Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Mike Bostic officiating. In honoring Edna’s wishes, cremation followed the funeral services. Arrangements were under the direction of Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton.

Nora Sheppard

Nora L. Sheppard, 81, of Laurel Creek, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019, at her residence. 

She was born at Lenore, Sept. 25, 1937, the daughter of the late Walter and Mae Canterbury Newsome.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Logan Christian Fellowship Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sons, Charles, Douglas, Walter and William (Pat) Kirk and Paris L. Sheppard; her daughters, Drema Kirk and Debbie Vance; and her sister, Margie Colegrove.  

She is survived by her sons, John L. Kirk and Mark A. Kirk; her daughters, Jeanette Coleman and Tammy Maynard; her brother, Harlan Bud Newsome; and 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. 

Funeral services were held 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2019, at the Victory Christian Center, Lenore, with Pastor Jeff Vallet and Pastor Terry Blankenship officiating.  Burial followed at the Evans Cemetery, Laurel Creek. Arrangements were under the direction of the Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton.

Paul Thompson

Paul Edward Thompson, 72, of Merrimac, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019, Pikeville Medical Center, Pikeville, Kentucky.

He was born at Williamson, June 26, 1946, the son of the late James Harold and Faye Agnes Leatherberry Thompson.

He was a former assembly worker for Ford Motor Company and a longtime member of the Chattaroy Church of God.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, David Thompson.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Lorraine Ward Thompson, of Merrimac; one son, Mark Edward Thompson (Gloria), of Poca; one daughter, Paula Roberts (Bill), of Nitro; two brothers, Ralph Thompson (Mary), of Inkster, Mich., and James Thompson (Debra),  of Merrimac; three sisters, Brenda Ferrell of Merrimac, Margaret LaFever (Gary), of Tennessee, and Janice Weir (Donnie), of Calhoun, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Kyle Thompson (Fiancee, Cara Chaney), Michael Thompson (Tayler), Jessica Lyons (Joshua), and Jeremiah Roberts (Samantha); four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Thompson, Laiken Thompson, Ryan Thompson and Henley Thompson; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019, at the Chattaroy Church of God with Rev. Terry Pigman giving the eulogy and Pastor Mike Bostic officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. View Memory Gardens, Huddy, Ky., with family members serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m., Friday, Feb. 8, at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hatfield Funeral Chapel of Toler, Kentucky.
