Howard Branham Sr.

Howard Branham Sr., 83, of Ragland, died Wednesday, July 10, 2019, at St. Mary’s Medical Center.  

He was born on Nov. 28, 1935; the son of the late William Sr. and Willie Daniels Branham.

He was a hard worker and lifelong coal miner. He worked various jobs, from hand loader and truck driver, to working his way up to president of Elkay Mining. He was the owner of H & B Enterprise and a proud member of the Connolly Memorial Baptist Church, where he participated in all church functions. He loved ringing the church bell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Todd Branham; and his siblings, Bill Branham Jr., Wanda Neace and Gaynelle Clark.

He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 65 years, Peggy Adkins Branham.  They met in the 4th grade and it was love at first sight.  

He will be sadly missed by his children, Howard Jr. (Tammy), Sabrina Belcher (Dickie), Barry Dwayne (Jamie), Craig Allen (Nettie), Bettina (Rick) and Selena (Mike); his daughter-in-law, Tonda Branham; his grandchildren, Brandy Branham, Richard Marlin Belcher, Nicholas Todd Branham, Amanda Lee White, Gabriel Shane Branham, Christopher Michael Stewart, Zachary Belcher, Jedd Allen Branham, Candice Marianne Branham, James Howard Branham and Shawnee Marie Baisden; his great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Jade White, Braden Howard Branham, Caitlyn White, Dodge Rivers Branham, Harper Bradlee Baisden and Lilly Ann Branham; his caregiver, Mable Keathley; many friends and Brothers and Sisters of the church; and his special friends, whom he dearly loved, Teddy Rogers, Woody Adams, John Meade, Steve Walters and Dr. Torin Walters

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m, Saturday, July 13, 2019, at the Connolly Memorial Baptist Church, Delbarton, with Rev. Howard Branham Jr. officiating. Burial followed at the Ferguson Cemetery, Harold, Ky., with his grandsons serving as pallbearers. Arrangements were under the direction of the Chafin Funeral Home of Delbarton.

Jerry Kiser Chambers, 92, of Lesage, formerly of Matewan, died peacefully Thursday, June 27, 2019, at her residence

She was born at Meador in 1926. She was one of seven children born to Lenna Kiser, originally from Tetange, Luxembourg, and Charlie Kiser, of Matewan.

She was a graduate of Matewan High School, attended business school in Parkersburg and was an associate at the Matewan National Bank before leaving the area.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Chambers; her sons, Tom Chambers

and Bill Chambers; her sisters, Blanche Artis, Wilma Kiser and Joanne Kinder; and her  brother, Charles Kiser.

She is survived by her son, Chuck Chambers; her daughter-in-law, Sonia

Chambers; her grandchildren, Bryan, Lenna, Elizabeth, Emily and Ellen; her great-grandchildren, Trey, Nick and Marcus; her sisters, Pauline Roberson and

Joyce Carey; her brother-in-law, Joe Kinder; her nieces, Kaye Carroll and Donna Talerico, of Cincinnati, Ohio; and her extended family.

The family especially thanks Carolyn Adkins for caring for Jerry in her last years.

A memorial service for family and close friends will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Chambers Funeral Services of Matewan.

Robert Leonard Preston, 74, of Olive Hill, Ky., died Thursday, July 11, 2019, at St. Claire Medical Center, Morehead, Kentucky.

He was born at Sprigg, March 17, 1945, the son of the late Frank and Angie Salmons Preston.

He was a retired electrician for Island Creek and Ken Carr Coal Companies where he had worked for over 20 years. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and of the Baptist faith. He loved to hunt and garden and loved the outdoors and cookouts. He moved to Olive Hill, Ky., in 2015.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 35 years, Vonda Messer Preston, of Olive Hill, Ky.; one son, Howard Puckett (Denise), of Olive Hill, Ky.; his sister-in-law, Genevieve Adkins, of Morehead, Ky.; his special friends, Brenda and Joseph McGlone, of Olive Hill, Ky.; and many other family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, July 14, 2019, at the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Albert Cable officiating. Burial followed at the Mountain View Memory Gardens, Maher, with Eddie Crabtree, Randy Hatfield, Moss McCloud, Josh Davis, Trinity Crank and Clayton Puckett serving as pallbearers. Arrangements were under the direction of the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry, Kentucky.

Winonna Joyce Runyon , 92, died peacefully, Sunday, July 14, 2019, at Mountain Brook, Alabama.

She was born at Chattaroy, Jan. 30, 1927, the daughter of the late Oscar and Glady Irene Cleghon.

She was a longtime resident of Pikeville, Kentucky. She was a loving wife, married to John Paul Runyon  Sr., and mother to her son, Dr. John Paul Runyon (Mountain Brook , Ala.), and daughter-in-law, Dr. Monica Hunter Runyon (Mountain Brook,Ala.).

She was an active member of the First Christian Church and multiple bridge clubs.

She loved to travel and play golf.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, John Paul Runyon Sr.; her brother, Thomas Cleghon; and her brother and sister-in-law, Wateman and Helene Cleghon.

She is survived by her son, Dr. John Paul Runyon and daughter-in-law, Dr. Monica Hunter; Mary Jane Cleghon; her nieces, Lisa and Debbie; and her nieces, Lyda Kay Phillips and Betty Carrol and Grant Howard.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 20, 2019, at the First Christian Church. Burial will follow at the Mt. View Memory Gardens, Maher. Arrangements are under the direction of the J.W. Call Funeral Home of Pikeville, Kentucky.

Betty Lorene Stanley, 85, of Ransom, Ky., died Friday July 12, 2019, at her residence.

She was born at Beefhide, Ky., Nov. 23, 1933, the daughter of the late Oval and Mary Belle Burke.

She was a homemaker and took exceptional care of her home and her family. She enjoyed gardening and tending to her flowers. She also enjoyed being a member of the D.A.V Women’s Auxiliary.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Stanley; her son, Johnny Stanley; her brothers, Johnny Burke, Donald Burke and Bobby Burke; her sister, Gladys Potter; and her great-grandchild, Genna Potter.

She is survived by her sons, Jeffery Stanley (Carolyn) and James Stanley (Denise), both of Ransom, Ky.; her brother, Raymond Burke, of Jacksboro, Tenn.; her grandchildren, Carrie Adkins, Cristin Potter, Ethan Stanley and Elyssa Stanley; her great-grandchildren, Justin Adkins, Ryan Adkins, Gavin Potter, Cara Potter, Cohen Potter and Cullen Potter; and a host of other loving family members and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 15, 2019, at the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel, Belfry, Ky., with Primitive Baptist Ministers officiating. Burial followed at the Joe Wright Cemetery, Myra, Ky., with her family serving as pallbearers. Arrangements were under the direction of the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry, Kentucky.

Jack Walton Stepp Sr., 83, of Stepptown, died Saturday, July 13, 2019, at his residence. He was born at Stone Coal, Dec. 3, 1935, the son of the late Arthur and Linda Spaulding Stepp.

He was retired from N&W Railroad.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Jay and Arthur Ray Stepp.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen Winogene McCleese Stepp, of Stepptown; his children, Jack Jr. Stepp (Pam) and John Stepp (Terri), both of Stepptown, Russell “Rusty” Stepp (Tonja), of Warner Robins, Ga., and Linda Stepp, of Stepptown; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one sister, Phyllis Linville (Otis), of Stepptown; and a host of extended family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, July 17, 2019, at the East Kermit Church of God with Otis Linville and Darrell Stepp officiating. Burial followed at the Stepp Cemetery, Stepptown. Arrangements were under the direction of the Mullins Family Funeral Home of Warfield.

Johnny Price Teeters Jr., 53, of Chattaroy, died Monday, July 15, 2019, at the St. Francis Selective Care Hospital, Charleston.

He was born in South Williamson, Ky., Oct. 21, 1965, the son of the late Johny Price Teeters Sr. and Mildred Iris Goad Teeters.

He was a star at Williamson High School where he graduated before attending Concord College. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers football fan.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Elizabeth Teeters Carlin, of Williamson; his nephew, John-Luke Patrick Carlin, of Williamson; his niece, Erica Raven Browning Hunt (Zackary), of Varney; his great-nieces, Elizabeth Rowan Grace Hunt and Eden Rue-Belle Hunt; his great-nephew, Zachary Levi Bo Browning; his special niece, Erin Riley Browning; his special aunt, Doris Judy Teeters, of Huntington; and a host of other loving family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the R.E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry, Kentucky.

Nita Jean West, 76, of Sidney, Ky., died Wednesday, July 10, 2019, surrounded by her family.  

She was born at Canada, Ky., Feb. 8, 1943, the daughter of the late Cullen and Ethel Crigger Smith.

She was a homemaker all of her life and a faithful member of the Big Creek Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, Tunis West and Gene Kendrick; her daughter, Paula Jean Reed; and her brothers, Paul and Donnie Smith.  

She was a dear Mother to her surviving children, Steven West (Helen), Sandy Reed (John), Jarrod West (Shannon) and Allyson Kendrick. The proud grandmother of Ashley Elyse, Christopher Stephen, Emily Grace, Caleb Isaiah, John Isaac Jameson, Iylah Bailey, Jane Kathryn, Eli Thomas and Aubree Grace and the proud great-grandmother of Presley, Parker, Capri and Ryker Isaiah. She was a loving sister to Ruby Yacklee, Maggie Carter and Betty Kuhn. She is also survived by a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Sunday, July 14, 2019, at the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with Gary Blackburn and Roger Mullins officiating. Burial followed at the Crigger Cemetery, Sidney, Ky., with Chris West, Caleb West, Isaac Reed, John Reed, Timmy Thacker, Paul Wesley Smith, Kevin Smith and Steven Smith serving as pallbearers. Arrangements were under the direction of the  R. E. Rogers Funeral Home of Belfry, Kentucky.
