Tug Valley holds off Belfry

Tug Valley’s Alyssa Newsome shoots a three against Belfry in action last Friday night. The Lady Panthers picked up a 53-51 win over Belfry. Tug Valley is scheduled to host Tolsia January 7 at 7:00 p.m.

Deep in Naugatuck, West Virginia a battle between two teams went down to the wire between the Lady Pirates of Belfry and the Tug Valley Lady Panthers. The Lady Panthers came out on top in the home game 53 – 51.

The first half seemed to be in favor of Belfry who would keep a marginal lead most of the first half. Mackenzie Maynard would carry the scoring load for the pirates in the first half with 13. She would also walk into half time with 7 rebounds and 5 blocks. 

For Tug Valley,  Kaylea Baisden’s 10 points and 3 assists in the first half led they way for the Lady Panthers. Baisden’s performance gave Tug Valley some momentum going into halftime down 31-25. 

Tug Valley emerged from the locker room with an intensity that would spark the comeback for the Lady Panthers. 

The Lady Panthers put on the defensive clamps on the Lady Pirates while on there way to a 14-0 run that ended at the 4:45 mark in the third and gave the Lady Panthers in the lead for the first time in the game.

At the end of the third quarter, the score was deadlocked at 41-41 and the tension was only getting tighter between the two teams. 

Belfry’s Mackenzie Maynard finished the game with a monster triple-double. She scored 28 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and  blocked 10 shots. 

However her moster night was not enough to detour Alyssa Newsome and the Lady Panthers. Newsome went deep into her bag to torch the Lady Pirates for 17 of her 20 points in the second half. She also secured the win for the Lady Panthers with a big steal with only 1:53 left in the game to put her team up enough to hold the Lady Pirates off. 

Tug Valley (4-4) is scheduled to host Tolsia Tuesday, January 7 at 7:00 p.m.
