Mingo County School officials are still probing into the circumstances surrounding a kindergarten student managing to walk away undetected from school property earlier this week.

School officials said the incident occurred at Lenore PK-8 on Nov. 29, but exactly how the student was able to elude detection by school personnel was still undetermined and remained under investigation.

In a statement released this week regarding the incident, Superintendent Dr. Johnny Branch said:

“The district is aware of an incident at Lenore Pre-K-8, on Monday, November 29, and we have taken measures to respond. We are conducting an internal investigation and we have also initiated an independent investigation into this matter to understand its scope more fully.

“Our goal is to ensure the health and safety of our students. A team has already met to look at current safety protocols and corrective actions will be taken as necessary. This situation is taken seriously, and our response is ongoing.

“Nothing further can be released at this time, so as to protect the confidentiality of the parties involved and the integrity of both investigations.”
