The execution of warrants for charges previously filed against a Matewan man led to additional charges being filed against him upon his arrest.
According to police, on May 27, 2021, officers went to the residence of Justin Hatfield, 46, to execute warrants for an armed robbery that he allegedly conspired with Johnny May to commit at a Blackberry City residence four days earlier on May 23.
In that complaint, police said, Hatfield used a 9mm handgun “to force and threaten” the occupants” in an attempt to rob them, “placing those victims in fear of receiving bodily injury.”
The charges related to the May 23 incident were armed robbery (first degree); assault during the commission of a crime; wanton endangerment involving a firearm; brandishing a deadly weapon; and burglary, conspiracy, and malicious assault.
While at Hatfield’s residence executing the warrants, police said, officers observed an eight-year-old child in the bedroom where Hatfield was attempting to hide.
Due to officers having drawn their weapons for officer safety, and because Hatfield had hidden under the bed before surrendering, he was additionally charged with child endangerment and obstruction.
Magistrate Donald Sansom arraigned him on all charges. The investigating and arresting officers were MCSD Deputies M. J. Mounts and P. Muncy.
As of presstime, no charges had been filed against May.
