In an unexpected move Wednesday, Mingo County Schools Superintendent Don Spence announced he is stepping down from his position and retiring.

The announcement came after a lengthy executive session during Wednesday’s special board of education meeting at which, along with other agenda items, Spence’s yearly job evaluation and four-year contract renewal were discussed in executive session.

Spence said he essentially made the decision during the executive session.

“After listening to the board and thinking very heavily about the situation, I have decided to retire,” he said.
