A man who allegedly shot and killed his parents in Logan County Monday morning was shot and killed later that day in Mingo County after a confrontation with multiple law enforcement agencies.

According to the Mingo County Sheriff’s Department, the incident began sometime before noon on Oct. 18, in the Logan County community of Brogue Lane near Dingess Mountain.

The MCSD said Shawn Dempsey Jr., 32, shot and killed his parents, who were identified as Shawn and Karen Dempsey, both age 52, of that Logan County community.

Although it is thought the shootings stemmed from an argument between Dempsey and his parents, investigators were still attempting to learn the precise reason behind the double murder.

Subsequent to the shootings and after a search for Dempsey initiated in Logan County, the MCSD said the Logan County Sheriff’s Office contacted the MCSD at around noon and requested assistance in the Dingess area.

“Logan County called and told us what had occurred and asked us to assist them in the search for him,” MCSD Chief Deputy Allen Mounts said Tuesday.

Mounts said the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WV DNR), also involved in the search for Dempsey, eventually located him in Wayne County and pursued him into Mingo County.

“Logan County deputies had already set up a roadblock at the mouth of Cub Branch,” Mounts said. “While being chased by the DNR, he hit a Logan County cruiser and managed to get through the roadblock.”

Mounts said MCSD deputies, along with the West Virginia State Police and Logan County Sheriff’s deputies, continued the chase to Mare Branch, where Dempsey’s vehicle eventually spun out and stopped.

At that point, Mounts said, Dempsey then exited his vehicle and began firing at the officers who returned fire, killing him.

The WVSP continues to investigate.
