WILLIAMSON – Trenton Hager netted 18 points and Preston May pitched in 13 as the Lenore Middle School boys’ basketball team won 53-41 at Williamson on Tuesday night.

The Rangers won their third straight game, improved to 9-2 on the season and swept the season series with the Wolfpack (5-3).

Cameron Slone added eight points for Lenore. Ashton Evans had six and Jarron Holyfield and Jacob Maynard tossed in four apiece.

Quentin Warren poured in a game-high 21 points and sank three 3-pointers.

Davean Joplin and Derek Jewell had six points each for the Wolfpack. Greg Williamson had four points.

Lenore led 17-12 after one quarter, 22-20 at the half and 37-33 after three. The Rangers outscored the Pack 16-8 in the fourth period.

Lenore, running for a fifth straight Mingo County championship, had beaten Willamson, 64-29, earlier in the season at home.

The Rangers were scheduled to play at Matewan on Thursday night before traveling to Logan on Jan. 14 and hosting Kermit on Jan. 19.

WMS was slated to play at Burch on Thursday. The Pack then heads to Dorton, Ky., on Jan. 14 and hosts Matewan on Jan. 19.

KERMIT 37, CRUM 25: The Kermit Middle School boys’ basketball team improved to 4-8 and won its third straight game with Wednesday night’s 37-25 win at home over the Crum Mountaineers.

Ben Brumfield had 12 points and Alex Serrano had 11 for the Blue Devils.

Kermit was set to host Gilbert on Thursday night.

KERMIT 34, BURCH 19: The Kermit boys held off Burch and prevailed, 34-19, over the Bulldogs on Monday night at Delbarton.

Bryson Richardson paced Kermit with 10 points. Ben Brumfield and Darian Vance tallied eight each. Ben Brumfield had seven rebounds.

The Blue Devils upped their record to 3-8. Burch fell to 1-10.

GILBERT 47, MATEWAN 24: Conner New scored 12 points and Jake Slater had 11 to lead the Gilbert Middle School boys’ basketball team to a 47-24 win at Matewan on Monday night.

Casey Sparks added nine points for Gilbert (5-5). Kaden Salmons had seven, Bo Hatfield four and Colton Queen and Cody Hatfield tallied two each.

Matewan dropped to 1-5. The Tigers’ scoring was unavailable.

The Lions were scheduled to host Kermit on Thursday night. Gilbert then hosts Man on Jan. 18 and travels to Burch on Jan. 19.

Matewan was set to host Lenore on Thursday and then travels to Williamson on Jan. 19 before going to Kermit on Jan. 23.

KERMIT 40, FALLSBURG, KY. 36 (OT): The Kermit boys were a 40-36 winner in overtime over Fallsburg, Ky., on Saturday at home.

Ben Brumfield led the way for Kermit with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Darian Vance had 10 points and five boards for the Blue Devils.

LENORE 52, CHAPMANVILLE 40: Preston May netted 22 points and led the Lenore boys to a 52-40 win over Chapmanville Middle School on Friday night at Lenore.

Jarron Holyfield drilled a pair of 3-pointers and added 12 points for the Rangers.

Cameron Slone also tallied 12 points, making 6 of 6 from the free throw line.

Trenton Hager had four points and CJ Branham chipped in with two points.

The Tigers were led by Conner Dingess, who poured in 16 points. Dakota Dalton also reached double figures with 11 points.

Lenore trailed CMS 11-6 after one quarter but led 17-16 at the half and 36-19 after three.

LENORE 61, GILBERT 25: The Lenore boys rolled to a 61-25 win at Gilbert on Thursday, Jan. 5 in Mingo County action.

Preston May led the way for Lenore as he netted 17 points.

Jackson Estep hit a trio of 3-pointers and finished with nine points.

Jarron Holyfield tossed in eight, while Jacob Maynard had six and Cameron Slone five.

Ashton Davis and CJ Branham had four apiece. Sawyer Heflin, Isaiah Moore, Blake Elkins and Brennick Bishop all had two each.

Conner New led Gilbert with 11 points. Bo Hatfield netted eight points, while Casey Sparks had five and Jacob Slater one.

WILLIAMSON 40, KERMIT 19: The Williamson boys returned to action on Thursday, Jan. 5 at Kermit and downed the Blue Devils, 40-19.

Quentin Warren led the Wolfpack with a game-high 19 points. Derek Jewell tossed in eight, while Landon Sawyers had five, Daveon Joplin and Greg Williams had four each and Peyton Ramsey chipped in with two points.

Ben Brumfield paced Kermit with eight points. Alex Serrano had seven.

BURCH 22, MATEWAN 17: The Burch boys picked up its first win of the season with a 22-17 victory over  Matewan on Thursday, Jan. 5 at home.

Gunner Deskins netted 12 points to lead Burch.

Gordon Hignite had three, while Blake Smith, Tanner Runyon and Blade Goff had two each. Michael Chaffin chipped in with one point.

Matewan’s scoring was not reported to the Mingo Messenger.


GILBERT 52, MATEWAN 5: The top-ranked Gilbert Middle School girls’ basketball team routed Matewan, 52-5, on Monday night at home, improving to 9-1 on the season.

Jayden Bailey led the way for Gilbert with a 14-point effort. Katie New also broke into double digits with 11 points.

Makena Ferrell had seven, Eva Munroe five and Kerissa Bradford four. Irelyn Mullins, Hannah Ellis, Sheridan Hatfield, Jayden Toler and Alisha Mitchem each had two points. Corrina Reyes chipped in with one point.

“We played our whole bench tonight,” Gilbert Coach Stephanie Endicott said. “Every girl had some minutes on the court. Our sixth-graders saw a lot of playing time the majority of the second half. It’s always good to get them on the court to gain some experience. It really helps with building the team for the future. We shot 45 percent as a team from the foul line tonight. I was proud of them for that because we’ve been missing out on easy points from the line the past few games. We’ve been putting extra emphasis on foul shooting during practices and they shot foul shots much better tonight.”

Matewan’s scoring was unavailable.

The Lady Lions were scheduled to play at Kermit on Thursday night. Gilbert then hosts Man on Jan. 18 and plays host to Burch on Jan. 19.

Matewan (0-5) was set to host Lenore on Thursday then travel to Williamson on Jan. 19.

CRUM 37, KERMIT 18: The Kermit Middle School girls’ basketball team lost 37-18 to Crum on Wednesday night at home, falling to 2-8 on the season.

The Lady Devils got five points each from Kateylnn Richardson and Lilly Mounts. Alexas Messer and Marie Pilkins had three each. Emma Spence had two points.

Crum was led by Carly Johnson’s 13 points.

Kermit hosted Gilbert on Thursday and travel to Lenore on Jan. 19.

LENORE 39, WILLIAMSON 10: The Lenore Middle School girls won 39-10 at Williamson on Monday, improving to 4-6 on the season.

Williamson dropped to 0-7.

Katie Hall drained the nets for 19 points to lead Lenore.

Brooke Vance pitched in eight points, while Emma Lackey had five, Ryliegh Baisden three and Abby Cannon and Chloe Dyer had two each.

Karsyn Noe had four points for Williamson and Isabella Kimbrell had three.

Lyssia Wilkerson hauled down seven rebounds for the Lady Pack. Raeagan Beckett had three assists and Bella May contributed five steals.

“Best game we have played,” Lady Pack Coach Julius Hatcher said. “Our shots are just not falling yet.”

The Lady Rangers were slated to play at Matewan on Thursday night, travel to Logan on Jan. 14 and host Kermit on Jan. 19.

WMS went to Burch on Thursday and then hosts Matewan on Jan. 19.

BURCH 35, KERMIT 17: The Burch Middle School girls’ basketball team upped its record to 8-3 on the season with Monday night’s 35-17 win at home over Kermit.

Journey Blair tossed in a game-high 21 points to lead Burch. Gracie Hynd had 10, while Lexi Mapes had four.

The Lady Devils (2-7) were led by Alexis Messer’s seven points. Maria Pilkins netted five, Katelynn Richardson three and Emma Spence two.

Kermit was slated to host Gilbert on Thursday night. KMS then plays at Lenore on Jan. 19.

The Lady Bulldogs were set to host Williamson on Thursday, then play at Gilbert on Jan. 19.

GILBERT 43, GLEN FORK 8: The Gilbert girls improved to 8-1 on the season after the Lady Lions routed Glen Fork, 43-8, on Friday, Jan. 7 at the Oceana Invitational.

Katie New led Gilbert with 15 points. Jayden Bailey also reached double figures with 12 points.

Eva Munroe had seven points, while Kerissa Bradford, Sheridan Hatfield, Alisha Mitchem and Miah Mounts all had two each. Corrina Reyes had one point.

GILBERT 30, LENORE 17: Jayden Bailey netted 11 points to lead the Gilbert girls over Lenore, 30-17, on Thursday, Jan. 6 at Gilbert.

Kerissa Bradford had nine, while Sheridan Hatfield and Katie New had four each. Eva Munroe chipped in with two points.

Brooke Vance had seven points for Lady Rangers. Abby Cannon had six. Katie Hall and Chloe Dyer had two each.

KERMIT 41, WILLIAMSON 3: The Kermit girls routed Williamson, 41-3, on Thursday, Jan. 5 at Kermit.

Katelynn Richardson drilled two 3-pointers and had 16 points on the night to lead Kermit.

Alexas Messer had eight, Emma Spence six, Marie Pilkins five, Lilly Mounts four and Kaitlynn Waller two.

Karsyn Noe scored the only field goal for Williamson. Erica Farley led the Pack with five rebounds.

BURCH 44, MATEWAN 8: The Burch girls hammered Matewan on Thursday, Jan. 5 at home in a 44-8 victory over the Lady Tigers at Delbarton.

Journey Blair led Burch with 14 points and two rebounds.

Jaylin Maynard contributed nine points, five steals and two rebounds.

Adelyn Belcher had five points for the Lady Bulldogs, while Gracie Hynd had three points and two steals.

Mackenzie Ferguson finished with three points, three boards and one steal.

Lexi Mapes had two points and two boards, while Macey Farley had two points, three steals and one rebound.

Rowan Hunt, Karis Preece and Aubrey Baisden all had two points for Burch. Hunt added three rebounds, Preece had a rebound and a steal and Baisden had two boards and two steals.
