LENORE – It's been a special season already for the Kermit Middle School football team.

Kermit, fielding a combined team again with Lenore, improved to 4-1 on the season with Tuesday night's 58-6 homecoming victory over the Gilbert Lions at the Lenore Middle School football field.

Austin Hatfield had the lone touchdown for the Lions on a 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

It was the first setback of the season for Gilbert, which dropped to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the county play.

“We did not tackle and we did not block,” Lions' coach Jamie Hatfield said.

The Blue Devils, coached by Tyler Hodge, upped its record in county play to 3-0.

Kermit’s statistics were unavailable.

Gilbert is scheduled to return to action on Sept. 27 at Burch. The Lions then host Williamson on Oct. 6 before hosting Oceana on Oct. 11.

Kermit is set to play in a showdown game at Williamson on Sept. 29. The Blue Devils then host Oceana on Oct. 6 and have a bye week on Oct. 11.

County playoff action is set to be played on Oct. 18 with the two semifinal games as No. 1 hosts No. 4 and No. 2 hosts No. 3.

The county championship game is then set for Oct. 25 at Mingo Central's Buck Harless Stadium.

GILBERT 40, MATEWAN 14: The Gilbert Middle School football team improved to 2-0 on the season with last Wednesday night's 40-14 win over Matewan in a game played at Mingo Central High School's Buck Harless Stadium.

Bo Hatfield scored five touchdowns for Gilbert and rushed for a whopping 327 yards on the ground. He also had two receptions for 43 more yards, finishing with 370 yards combined.

Hatfield also had 10 tackles on the defensive side of the ball.

Sheridan Hatfield added a 40-yard TD grab for the Lions.

Braylon New had two carries for 26 yards and seven tackles on defense.

Brody Davis contributed eight tackles on defense. Bryron Jude tallied five tackles. Braylon Mounts had six stops, while Jacob Slider had two tackles and Noah Washington one.

Brandon Vance and Peyton Parker each scored a touchdown for the Tigers, which dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the county.

Matewan was scheduled to host Williamson on Thursday night. The Tigers then host Burch on Oct. 11 after a pair of scheduled bye weeks.
